TLIC Psalms. May 18. All Mankind Fears.

Read Psalm 64:7-10.  7But God shoots his arrow at them; they are wounded suddenly. 8They are brought to ruin, with their own tongues turned against them; all who see them will wag their heads. 9Then all mankind fears; they tell what God has brought about and ponder what he has done. 10Let the righteous one rejoice in the Lord and take refuge in him! Let all the upright in heart exult!

God’s judgment is swift and complete. The enemy’s words that once flew like arrows at David are turned against them, becoming the arrows of God. God alone will bring them to sudden ruin, not David. What will David do? Take refuge in God and rejoice in him.

Without Christ it may be difficult to know exactly which side we are on in these verses. Are we the righteous and the upright in heart? We’d like to think so. Or are we the wicked evildoer of verse two? If so, there is no comfort in the judgments of God. Only fear.

But with Christ we know exactly who we are in this psalm. We are those who have taken refuge in Christ and in his judgment on the cross. We are the righteous, the upright in heart in him. Daily we ponder what God has done in judging Jesus in our place.

To live is Christ is to find comfort in the judgment of God, a God who will not let wickedness stand, not in the world and not in my heart.

Prayer. Jesus, you took my judgment on the cross. Now the natural consequences of my life are your loving discipline, not your condemnation. Help me to rejoice in you as I sink ever more into the refuge of your love and mercy. Amen.
