Job 38:4-7. “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding.
5 Who determined its measurements—surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
6 On what were its bases sunk,
or who laid its cornerstone,
7 when the morning stars sang together
and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Angels love advents.
Here Job gives us what Genesis 1 doesn’t – a glimpse into the response of the angels at the advent (arrival) of all things. When God created the earth the sons of God, the angels, were singing together and shouting for joy. When the earth arrived there was a heavenly hurray. While God was laying the foundations of the earth, the angels were throwing a party.
Why?
Because the darkness had been pierced and light and life had come. God was sharing his very own life through the act of creating. He was restoring order to chaos. “Without form and void” was about to be bursting with shape and fullness.
Creation was the advent of mankind. Adam and Eve would be formed as the image bearers of God. Made alive with God’s own breath. And together they will represent and reveal God to the world.
And the angels were celebrating!
Many years later another advent will have the angels singing and shouting for joy. The “Second Adam” would be formed in the womb of Mary by the hovering Holy Spirit. The ultimate image bearer has come. Life and Light born in a manger.
And once again the angels were celebrating.
Luke 2:13. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God…
Song of the Angels (1881) by William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905).
But there’s another advent where the angels sang. Do you remember the advent of Christ into your own life? At your salvation? How did you feel on that day? The day you received the life and light of Christ? Did you know that at that advent the angels were celebrating yet again?
Luke 15:10. “I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
Just like the creation of Adam and the incarnation of Christ, a new image bearer had been formed. You. Christ in you made the angels sing and it should make you want to sing every day until Christ’s final advent.
How can you celebrate your salvation today? What song will you sing with the angels? Today how can you let someone know that you are happy you’re saved?
