Read Psalm 17:1-9. 1Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry! Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit! 2From your presence let my vindication come! Let your eyes behold the right! 3You have tried my heart, you have visited me by night, you have tested me, and you will find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress. 4With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent. 5My steps have held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped. 6I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me; hear my words. 7Wondrously show your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand. 8Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings, 9from the wicked who do me violence, my deadly enemies who surround me.
Sometimes it’s best to hear the words of the Psalms coming from the lips of Jesus rather than our own. Who among us can say things like, “You find nothing wrong with me, God.” Or, “My steps have held fast to your path and my feet have not slipped.”
Of course Jesus could say all of these things about his life amongst his surrounding enemies. To see him was to see the right. His cause was always just. His lips never uttered deceit. His mouth never transgressed. Even on the cross as Christ hung in guilt and shame, he knew his vindication would come three days later.
What David and Jesus both knew, and what we can know too, is that God can and does show his steadfast love to us, and it is that same covenant love that makes us the innocent ones, worthy of his protection. David lived inside that covenant protection, and now, In Christ, so do we. We are forever kept as the apple of God’s eye. We are forever hidden in the shadow of his wing.
To live is Christ is to be God’s delight. Always seen, always heard, always hidden in the power of his love.
Prayer. Jesus, because you were vindicated in righteousness I will be too. May you forever be the apple of my eye just as I am yours.
