TLIC Daily. Day 1. January 1: God Created.

Genesis 1:1-3. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

All life begins with God. In the beginning, God….

Some would say that life began from nothing. In the beginning there was nothing… and then BANG! There was something. Besides being impossible this theory of origins is also very depressing. A life from nothing is nothing. It is meaningless. It is without form and void.

But the Bible tells us that our life comes from the creative act of God. That only God can bring shape and fullness to a formless and void world. And only God can bring shape and fullness to our meaningless and empty lives.

How? How does God give our lives meaning and significance? How does he fill our dark lives with light? The answer is a bit hidden in these first three verses of the Bible, but it is there.

The answer is love.

Wait. Where is there love in Genesis 1:1-3? It’s in the Trinity. The loving community that is God. The never ending, pure, flow of love found within God himself.

Can you see the Trinity at work in Genesis 1:1-3? God the first cause of creation. The Spirit, hovering over the face of the deep. God the Son? Yes, he’s here too. He is the living Word of God – And God said. The word of God is the Son of God through whom all creation came into existence.

John 1:1-3. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.He was in the beginning with God.All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Colossians 1:16. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.

The Tree of Life: life and love.

God IS love. In the beginning God created from love, in love, for love. The perfectly united Father and Son let their love flow out by the Spirit so that we might share in his love. God’s love is the source and goal of all life. A love that shares and gives and creates. A love that brings shape and fullness to a formless and void world.

The love of God was displayed at creation. But the greatest display of God’s love is the incarnated Christ. The creator becoming the created. God’s life made receivable.

“To live is Christ” is to receive God’s love. A love that created us and recreates us. A love that overcomes our darkness with light. A love that gives shape and fullness to our otherwise formless and empty lives.

You

What makes your life feel formless and empty at times? What sources of life and love, besides God, have you been pursuing?

You in Christ

How does knowing that your life comes from God give you a renewed sense of meaning and fullness in this new year?

Christ in you

The creative love of Christ lives in you. What is one creative thing you can do today to bring light and love to someone else?
