Read Psalm 119:121-128 121I have done what is just and right; do not leave me to my oppressors. 122Give your servant a pledge of good; let not the insolent oppress me. 123My eyes long for your salvation and for the fulfillment of your righteous promise. 124Deal with your servant according to your steadfast love, and teach me your statutes. 125I am your servant; give me understanding, that I may know your testimonies! 126It is time for the Lord to act, for your law has been broken. 127Therefore I love your commandments above gold, above fine gold. 128Therefore I consider all your precepts to be right; I hate every false way.
The Psalmist is feeling the pressure from his enemies, the insolent who seek to oppress him. His prayer is for action – it is time for the Lord to act – but also for long term commitment – give your servant a pledge of good.
Pledge comes from a word that means to mix or mingle. The psalmist is asking God to mix his divine cause with the psalmist’s. Make us one in purpose. Unite our outlooks and our goals. Let your will be my will and my will your will.
There’s no reason to doubt that the Lord will do this because of his covenant with David, his steadfast love, and David’s love for God’s commandments.
What might such a pledge look like for David? That is unclear. But for those who are in Christ that pledge is the presence of God himself, the indwelling life of Christ by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of Christ is our pledge. Our guarantee. He is the mixing of God’s will with our own. We share a heart, we share a mindset, we share a spirit with Jesus. He loves us eternally and we love him and his commandments because his love lives in us. That’s to live is Christ.
You: Do you require any other pledge from God other than your union with Christ?
You in Christ: What pledge has God made to us in Christ?
Christ in you: Where can you see your will mixing with Christ’s will? Praise God for this transformation!
Pray: Father, you have given me your pledge when you placed the Holy Spirit in me. Now our causes are forever joined as the cause of Christ. Thy will be done. Amen.
