TLIC Psalms. November 11. A Limit to All Perfection.

Read Psalm 119:89-96 89Forever, O Lord, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens. 90Your faithfulness endures to all generations; you have established the earth, and it stands fast. 91By your appointment they stand this day, for all things are your servants. 92If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. 93I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have given me life. 94I am yours; save me, for I have sought your precepts. 95The wicked lie in wait to destroy me, but I consider your testimonies. 96I have seen a limit to all perfection, but your commandment is exceedingly broad.

Have you yet seen a limit to all perfection? If you’ve lived long enough I’m sure you have. This statement sounds more like Ecclesiastes than it does the psalms. Everything has its limits. Nothing lasts forever. Eventually it all lets you down. Things that we think are “perfect” grow less and less satisfying over time. If you live long enough all of life’s perfections come to an end.

By contrast the commandment of God is exceedingly broad. There is an inexhaustible breadth to God’s commandments. They are broader than the universe, as wide as God himself. His commandments are absolute. Unchanging. Liberating. Because they reflect the nature of God himself, there is no limit to what we can learn from them about God and his love for us. Every letter, word, phrase, sentence, paragraph, chapter, page, book, of God’s law makes known his love for us in Christ.

In Christ? Yes, Christ. If we were only talking about a book, we would have to admit that it too is limited in its perfection. Eventually the words run out. But when we see that Christ is the final revelation, the final Word, the limitless Law of God, then we can see that we have been given a perfection that has no borders. We drink from a well that never runs dry.

To live is Christ is to live without limits. The Christ in you is God’s boundless perfection. Broader than the universe itself. There is no end to God’s love for us in Christ, and no end to knowing God through Christ.

You: Have you ever felt like you’ve reached the limit of God’s love?

You in Christ: How does being united to Christ allow us to experience limitlessness?

Christ in you: How would your day be different if you truly believed that you had access to limitless love, joy, and peace?

Pray: Father, when every other well runs dry, keep me drinking from the ever flowing stream of your grace and love in Jesus. Amen.
