Read Psalm 114:1-10 1When Israel went out from Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language, 2Judah became his sanctuary, Israel his dominion. 3The sea looked and fled; Jordan turned back. 4The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs. 5What ails you, O sea, that you flee? O Jordan, that you turn back? 6O mountains, that you skip like rams? O hills, like lambs? 7Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, 8who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of water.
The psalmist presents the Exodus from a whole new point of view, that of the creation. The sea fled. The Jordan turned back. Mountains and hills are running away from God’s presence. The Earth is terrified. All creation knows to get out of the way for God’s arrival.
We can see nature responding in a similar way at both the cross of Christ and the return of Christ. At the crucifixion, the sun fled and the Earth quaked. At Christ’s return, the sky and Earth will flee.
Revelation 20:11. Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them.
Nothing gets in the way of God’s love. Nothing. Not even sky and sea, mountain and river, can prevent his rescue of you in Christ. Just as the Red Sea moved out of the way so that God could bring a living spring of water from a dead rock, so too all creation stands aside as God brings Christ’s living water from out of your once hard heart.
To live is Christ is to live an unshakable life knowing that all of creation trembles in the presence of God. And we are now the new creation. Nothing in all the universe can stop the love of Christ from breaking through in our lives today like fresh water in a desert place. Like a pool from a rock.
You: Is your life unshakable? Why or why not?
You in Christ: What does it mean that we are already the new creation? What are some implications of this?
Christ in you: Where can you see Christ producing living water in your soul lately?
Pray: Father, I admit that I get easily shaken by this life when I should be the steady one as everything else shakes in your presence. Steady me today by your love. Let me drink from the spring of living water that you provide. Amen.
