Proverbs 1:8. Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching,
Solomon uses the word son 93 times in the book of Proverbs. Why is that? Because the book of Proverbs was meant to be used by fathers to teach their sons how to be wise. Did anybody teach you how to be wise growing up? Your parents? Grandparents? School teachers? A pastor? Ideally yes.
To read Proverbs correctly we must read it from the viewpoint of a son or daughter. As the reader, we are the child who has been sat down to learn the way of wisdom – skill in navigating the complexities of life that come by the fear of the Lord.
When the New Testament call us sons of God (Gal. 4, Rom. 8), or children of God (John 1), it is reminding us not only of our position in Christ, but of our possession of wisdom. As sons we are meant to be wise. As children of God we are meant to hear our Heavenly Father’s instruction. What is that instruction?
Well, for the person in Christ that is the entire New Testament and all that it contains. The teachings of Jesus that form disciples. But if we wanted to boil the Father’s instruction down to two things, just two simple yet profound commands, it would be these:
1 John 3:23. And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.
1. Believe in Jesus (In Christ).
2. Love one another (Christ in you).
These two things are the beginning of wisdom. They are the fear of the Lord. They are what son-ship requires and empowers at the same time.
In Christ: Do you see your Christian faith as coming down to these two things: Belief in Jesus and love for others? Why or why not?
Christ in you: How might you be purposeful in learning how to love like Christ? Are you waiting for a feeling, or can you begin with an action?
Prayer: Father, your goal is for me to be wise like my brother, Jesus. Help me to see how my son-ship makes me wise in faith and in love. Amen.
Blessed Morning,
I do see my faith coming down to these two things, because our belief in Jesus leads us to a life of discipleship. As we walk in Christ, we aim to do His Will because we love Him. And because of His love in us and for us, we as Christians allow His love to be shared through us and by us.
Only seeing others as Christ wants us to see them, loving them in the unconditional way He loves us, not through fleshly ways or eyes. But through the Holy Spirit.
And through the Holy Spirit, prayer, and obedience we began to align our ways with His (action). And share His love (both action and feeling, as love is shown through both) ♥
