TLIC Psalms. April 11. Guide Us Forever.

Read Psalm 48:9-14. 9We have thought on your steadfast love, O God, in the midst of your temple. 10As your name, O God, so your praise reaches to the ends of the earth. Your right hand is filled with righteousness. 11Let Mount Zion be glad! Let the daughters of Judah rejoice because of your judgments! 12Walk about Zion, go around her, number her towers, 13consider well her ramparts, go through her citadels, that you may tell the next generation 14that this is God, our God forever and ever. He will guide us forever.

As in the first half of the psalm, here again we can peel back the layers of redemptive history to reveal first, the ancient city of Zion (Jerusalem) as the back drop for this parade of praise for God’s steadfast love. Second, God’s eschatological city descending from the heavens with praises reaching to the ends of the earth.

In between these visions of a past and future Zion is our vision of the church as the present Mount Zion. Those who are in Christ ponder his steadfast love for us at Calvary. The church’s praise truly reaches to the ends of the earth. We review the towers, ramparts, and citadels of Christ’s invincible church. We tell the next generation that this is our God – Jesus Christ and the Spirit of Christ who will guide us forever.

To live is Christ is to consider all that God has done for us in him.

To walk around Zion, resting in the security of life in Christ.

To count our towers, rejoicing in our mutual growth in Christ.

To consider her ramparts, trusting in our eternal security in him.

To go through her citadels, enjoying the beauty of Jesus the lover of our souls.

To allow that love to guide us corporately forever until we reach the future Mount Zion in eternity.

Prayer. Jesus, guide me forever by your grace and love so that I don’t wander from life and mission in the church, the city of God.
