Read Psalm 29. 1Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. 2Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness. 3The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over many waters. 4The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. 5The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon. 6He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox. 7The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire. 8The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. 9The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth and strips the forests bare, and in his temple all cry, “Glory!” 10The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever. 11May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!
Just as the majesty of the Lord remains unparalleled, so too the majesty of this psalm. Eighteen times David will identify the Lord, and seven times the Lord’s voice will speak.
When David hears the cedars break, the winds skipping over the mountains, the fires crackling, the wilderness shaking, the leaves blowing off the trees, the fawn bleating, the flood waters roaring, in all of these he hears the voice of Yahweh and the resounding praise of creation.
But creation is not the only place we hear God’s voice. We hear it in the cries of our Savior Jesus from the cross of Calvary. On the cross Jesus hung enthroned over the flood by allowing himself to be destroyed by the flood waters of God’s holy judgment. The splendor of his holiness was displayed in the naked shame of his battered body. The voice of his power and majesty tore in half the veil and tore open graves. As Jesus’ voice thundered out the word tetelestai, it is finished, all in the heavenly temple cried Glory! By his cross he is king forever. By his resurrection he gives strength to his people and blesses us with peace.
To live is Christ is to ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name – Jesus. Savior. Immanuel.
Prayer. Jesus, you speak, and creation trembles. You spoke and my sins were erased. Speak your strength to me today from your Spirit to mine. Amen.
