TLIC Psalms. February 19. Wait for the Lord.

Read Psalm 27:7-14. 7Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud; be gracious to me and answer me! 8You have said, “Seek my face.” My heart says to you, “Your face, Lord, do I seek.” 9Hide not your face from me. Turn not your servant away in anger, O you who have been my help. Cast me not off; forsake me not, O God of my salvation! 10For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the Lord will take me in. 11Teach me your way, O Lord, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies. 12Give me not up to the will of my adversaries; for false witnesses have risen against me, and they breathe out violence. 13I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! 14Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!

David had seen the Lord’s anger at King Saul leading to his rejection by God. David is resolved to never repeat Saul’s errors. Thus, he prays, Hide not your face from me, don’t turn away in anger, cast me not off, forsake me not. But that is a prayer that no believer in Christ ever need pray.

How much more than even David can those in Christ say with the psalmist I believe that I will look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living? How much more does our union with Christ allow us to wait in naked faith, strong and courageous, for the Lord’s return? How much more can those with the indwelling Spirit of Christ seek the teaching and leading of Jesus, our living path of wisdom?

How can we live in such assurance of faith? Because of the faith of Jesus our savior. By faith he sought the face of God in his darkest hours on the cross. Even in his God forsakenness, even when he was given up to the will of his adversary, he still trusted in the goodness of God. Jesus didn’t take matters into his own hands. He waited on the Lord with great courage and strength proving the faithfulness of God toward us.

To live is Christ is to live in this same faithful waiting. Waiting that courageously faces the day knowing that in Christ we will never be turned away, never cast off, and never forsaken.

Prayer. Jesus, I wait for you. And as I wait help me to daily seek your face. Amen.
