Read Psalm 19:1-6. 1The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. 2Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. 3There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. 4Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, 5which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. 6Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
Is the sun shining as you read this? If you are an early morning riser maybe you saw the sun come up and begin its journey across the sky. Or maybe you are more likely to see the sun set in splendor after marrying his bride.
What about the night sky? Are you a star gazer? Can you pick out the constellations by name? Did you take time to catch the latest meteor shower, lunar eclipse, mars rising?
Do the silent skies scream the glory of God to you as they did to David? What does the grandeur of the universe teach you about God? Or have you slipped into one of two extremes: ignoring creation altogether or worshiping God’s handiwork in place of God himself.
The Psalmists not only sees the beauty and majesty of nature in the sky, but also the story of Christ and his salvation. The sun, like a bridegroom, leaves its heavenly tent each morning and with great joy he sets out to find his bride and bring her home to be with him. Nothing can stop him and nothing is hidden from him. The Sun-Groom knows all and sees all. The Sun-Groom radiates his heat on everyone.
To live is Christ is to see Christ’s glory in all of God’s handiwork. The glory of a risen prince coming to rescue his beloved from the darkness of the night sky.
Prayer. Jesus, the heavens declare the glory of your salvation. May I take the time to look up at your beautiful sky and see your love for me. Amen.
