“To live is Christ” is therefore much, much, more than self-denial or the “imitation of Christ.” It is a whole new identity, a new reality, a new nature. It’s a whole new life and a whole new way to live. Alive through death. Living by dying.
And so here we are, trapped in the dead end of the law. Deceived into thinking that what condemns us will actually justify us. If only there was a whole new way to live. If only there was “to live is Christ.”
“To live is Christ” has turned all of God’s word into life giving, freedom bringing truth. God’s perfect law is now our liberty. The freedom that comes when our sin is exposed and our new life of love and grace is empowered.
“To live is Christ” gives us a whole new operating system of grace. Will we boot up the old deadly system of law keeping today, or will we trust the power and ease of use of living from the indwelling life of the eternal Son of God?
In Christ, God’s first word to us is always grace. And his second word to us is faith. “I love you…so trust me…” “Christ is alive in you…so to live is Christ.”
As ungodly saints we pursue Christ. We trust Christ. We submit to Christ. We desire his life, his character, his love. His life becomes our law – the “law of Christ.” Not a law we must live up to, but a law that is alive in us. That’s “to live is Christ.”
