Proverbs 8:27-29. 27When he established the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, 28when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, 29when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth,
Hopefully today’s a good day for you to get outside and consider creation. The creation of the universe didn’t just happen, despite what our materialist friends might say. Creation is caused, orderly, good, and even declarative – The heavens declare the glory of God, Psalm 19:1. There is nothing random about anything in nature. Rather, everything in creation is wise. Why? Because Wisdom was there when it all happened.
That’s why the universe is just right for our survival. Consider:
He established the heavens – God filled space with stars that provide the building blocks for life (carbon).
He drew a circle on the face of the deep – God made Earth a revolving sphere with gravity so that we don’t float away. To this day we can observe gravity, but we can’t explain it, or prove it, apart from God.
He made firm the skies above – God made the air around us the exact formula we need to breathe.
He established the fountains of the deep – Without the exact right amount of water in our oceans life would not be sustainable on Earth.
He assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command – Beach day anyone?
He marked out the foundations of the earth – Rotations. Revolutions. Centrifugal force. Centripetal force. Velocity. All eternal decrees by God that make our planet safe to live on.
God established his creation by wisdom, all because he loves us and wants us to have the perfect environment to live together with him. And it isn’t just the physical universe that is so ordered. Wisdom has brought order to all living – morality, justice, right and wrong, ethics.
This is what Christ came to restore, the created moral order, but also all of creation. If Jesus can re-establish the physical creation one day, then how much more can he establish us in his wisdom as his new creation?
Established in his peace.
Established in his grace.
Established in his love.
Now we know why the “love command” stands at the center of all creation. It’s not just a nice idea to love each other, it is the foundation of all creation. All creation exists for someone else’s good, and for God’s glory, not its own. Can you say the same thing about yourself?
You: When was the last time you observed creation and thought about how it reveals the wisdom of God?
You in Christ: In what ways has God established you in Christ just as he has established the earth in the universe?
Christ in you: Do you see the law of love at work in nature? In your life?
Pray: Father, thank you for the wonderful creation that surrounds me and the wonderful new creation that I am in Christ. Amen.
