Read Psalm 119:137-144 137Righteous are you, O Lord, and right are your rules. 138You have appointed your testimonies in righteousness and in all faithfulness. 139My zeal consumes me, because my foes forget your words. 140Your promise is well tried, and your servant loves it. 141I am small and despised, yet I do not forget your precepts. 142Your righteousness is righteous forever, and your law is true. 143Trouble and anguish have found me out, but your commandments are my delight. 144Your testimonies are righteous forever; give me understanding that I may live.
Righteous. Right. Righteousness. Righteousness. Righteous. Righteous.
God is righteous, and his righteousness is an everlasting righteousness. He is unchanging in his righteousness. What he is he always will be. He must deal with sin. He will deal with sin. He must bless the godly. He will bless the godly. He must bring about justice. He will bring about justice. Why? Because righteous are you, O Lord.
All Christian comfort begins here. God’s righteousness is no longer his alone, it is ours in Christ. The everlasting righteousness of God has been imputed to us by our union with Christ making us the very righteousness of God (2 Cor. 5:21). Christian, you are justified now and forever. Not by your own doing, your own performing, your own merit, but simply by your faith in the righteous work of Christ’s cross.
To live is Christ is to understand our righteousness as Christ’s own. Righteousness declared over us by the word of God, received by faith into our hearts as the Word of God.
You: Are you trusting in imputed righteousness or earned righteousness?
You in Christ: How does union with Christ make God’s righteousness our own?
Christ in you: What can Christ’s righteousness in you look like today?
Pray: Father, give me understanding that I may live. I want to understand the fullness of your gospel, your grace and goodness. Cause me to live out your righteousness by faith in Christ in me. Amen.
