Read Psalm 119:25-32 25My soul clings to the dust; give me life according to your word! 26When I told of my ways, you answered me; teach me your statutes! 27Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works. 28My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word! 29Put false ways far from me and graciously teach me your law! 30I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I set your rules before me. 31I cling to your testimonies, O Lord; let me not be put to shame! 32I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart!
The three verbs at the end of the stanza outline the Christian experience:
- I have chosen the way of faithfulness.
- I cling to your testimonies.
- I will run in the way of your commandments.
The embrace of this spiritual process is made possible by David’s enlarged heart. His open life. The enlarged heart is a gracious gift from God that comes with seeing that there is more to this life than our own little kingdom. When we step down from the throne of the universe and let Christ take his rightful place, this does not shrink our life, it expands it. We now see things we could never see before. Faith eyes take us to whole new worlds. Including a world where the commandments of God, and the demands of his love, are no longer a burden to bear but a path to run upon with the indwelling love of Christ as our guiding trailblazer.
To live is Christ is to live from the enlarged heart. The open eyes of faith. The eternal life hidden in Christ. A life that allows us to choose his faithfulness, cling to his teachings, and run on the path of his love without stumbling or falling.
You: To what degree do verses 30-32 describe your daily life?
You in Christ: How does our union with Christ enlarge our heart to live by faith and not sight?
Christ in you: How might you begin to see the law of love as not only a command to obey but a path to run on with Jesus.
Pray: Jesus, you have enlarged my heart. You have made my life so much bigger than it was before you. Help me to see, to choose, to cling, to run with you. Amen.
