Read Psalm 119:9-16 9How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. 10With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! 11I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. 12Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes! 13With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth. 14In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches. 15I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. 16I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.
This stanza’s opening question is of utmost importance for us all. How do we remain pure? How do we live out our sanctification before God? I’m sure you know by now that life in Christ does not just happen TO you. Of course it does happen TO you, purity is imputed to you in Christ. But then it also happens WITH you. From Christ in us, we walk in the way of purity.
How do we know what the way of Christ-like purity looks like? The word. The commandments. The statutes. The testimonies. The precepts. Nothing in scripture is arbitrary, nor is it basic behavior modification. It is Christ. The Word. To store up the word in our hearts is to store up Christ. It all points to him and his glory.
What do you do with the word? I mean literally? Do you read it? Great. Do you store it up in your heart? Do you meditate upon it? Do you delight in the duty of knowing Christ through his word?
If your time in the word is not shaping you into Christ, then honestly, you’re doing it wrong.
To live is Christ is to have Christ alive in your heart, making the word that he delights in your delight as well.
You: Does your time in the word of God shape you into Christ?
You in Christ: How does knowing we are united to Christ allow us to love the word without fear of failing in its instruction.
Christ in you: How can you grow in knowing Christ through knowing his word?
Pray: Father, I want to delight in you and I realize I can’t grow in that delight apart from your word. Keep it alive in me as I make knowing Christ, your son, a priority in my life. Amen.
