Read Psalm 112:1-10 1Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his commandments! 2His offspring will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. 3Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. 4Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous. 5It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice. 6For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever. 7He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. 8His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries. 9He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor. 10The wicked man sees it and is angry; he gnashes his teeth and melts away; the desire of the wicked will perish!
Psalms 111 and 112 are companion psalms. Both are Hebrew acrostics. The first is about God, and the second is about man.
Psalm 112 describes the righteous and blessed man. Godliness is not a burden for him, it is a delight. He fears God, does what is right, he is gracious, merciful, and just, and trusts the Lord. His goodness overflows to those around him. He resists the world’s temptations of fear, greed, and power.
Many of the descriptors are used of God himself in Psalm 111. This godly man looks and acts like God. This is not a far-fetched fantasy for us in Christ. Yes, only Jesus himself fulfilled this psalm. He alone is the blessed man who perfectly feared the Lord and delighted in his commandments. But we too are being transformed into his likeness. We are Psalm 112 people.
God is righteous and just, as are we in Christ.
God is generous, gracious, and merciful, as are we in Christ.
God is courageous, strong, and immovable, as are we in Christ.
God’s desires are satisfied, as in Christ are ours.
To live is Christ is to live in the “already, but not yet.” We are already Psalm 112 people, but not yet fully. We are offspring, growing into our place in him. Therefore, we keep our eyes on our Savior, the Blessed Man, Jesus, who distributes his life freely to all who rest in him.
You: Can you see yourself in Psalm 112?
You in Christ: In what ways are we already living Psalm 112, and in what ways are we not fully there yet?
Christ in you: Where can you see Christ transforming you into Psalm 112?
Pray: Jesus, you are the Psalm 112 man. The Blessed Man. And yet you are secure enough to share all your blessedness with me. May I grow into your likeness today just a little bit more as I keep my eyes on you. Amen.
