Read Psalm 111:1-11 1Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation. 2Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them. 3Full of splendor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever. 4He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered; the Lord is gracious and merciful. 5He provides food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever. 6He has shown his people the power of his works, in giving them the inheritance of the nations. 7The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy; 8they are established forever and ever, to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness. 9He sent redemption to his people; he has commanded his covenant forever. Holy and awesome is his name! 10The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!
Works. Work. Wondrous works. Works.
How easy it is to become forgetful of the works of the Lord. To be caught up in our own work, in the home, at the job, even in the church. But wisdom keeps God’s works before us. His works, work, wondrous works, and works.
His works – Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them. These are works of creation, meant to be studied (yes, the Bible is pro arts and sciences). Have you spent time today “studying” God’s work of creation?
His work – Full of splendor and majesty is his work. The providential acts of the Lord. The works of man which God uses to accomplish his purposes. Are you aware of God’s providence in your life? His work through circumstances?
His wondrous works – He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered. God’s great saving acts, like Passover and the Exodus. For the Christian it is the death and resurrection of Christ, our exodus from sin and death. Do you remember your salvation through participation in the Lord’s Table, communion?
His works – The works of his hands are faithful and just. May all the works of God point our hearts to the faithful and just work of his hands. The hands of Christ pierced on the cross, bringing redemption to mankind, and establishing his covenant with his people forever.
To live is Christ is to live under the umbrella of all God’s great works. From creation to the cross, may we never cease to fear the Lord for his awesome deeds.
You: Which of the works of the Lord above do you tend to forget?
You in Christ: In what way is union with Christ part of God’s wondrous works?
Christ in you: What work do you see Christ doing in you lately?
Prayer. Father, complete your work in me as I marvel at the work of Christ. Amen.
