Read Psalm 105:1-7. 1Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! 2Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works! 3Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice! 4Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually! 5Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered, 6O offspring of Abraham, his servant, children of Jacob, his chosen ones! 7He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth.
Psalm 105 will trace Israel’s history from Abraham to Promised Land. All who are in Christ can easily join in this celebration, not as mere spectators, but as fully included offspring of Abraham, for that is who we are.
Galatians 3:7. Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham.
Because of Jesus, the Israelite Messiah, and our union with his life, our story does not begin where Israel’s leaves off. It begins where Israel’s begins. Our story is the Old Testament story just as much as it is the New. Israel’s redemption is our redemption. Abraham’s faith is our faith. The psalmist’s praise to the Lord should be our praise to the Lord, and his thanksgiving our thanksgiving. Why?
Because God’s wondrous works in Israel’s past are his works in our past. His miracles and judgments we can rightly claim as our own spiritual legacy. He is just as much the Lord your God today as he was and is the Lord their God yesterday.
To live is Christ is to seek this same Lord’s presence in the same way that the psalmist envisions for the people of faith – continually. A reality made known to us by the continual presence of Christ in our very hearts by the Spirit.
How? How do we continually seek his presence? As we said yesterday, remember the wondrous works and THE WORK that he has done – the miracle and judgment of the cross of Christ.
You: How do you read the Old Testament stories? Are they also your story?
You in Christ: How does our union with Christ allow us to claim the same spiritual legacy as saints like Abraham and David and Ruth?
Christ in you: Will you join the “everlasting throng” today and “crown him Lord of all?”
Pray: Father, thank you for my spiritual legacy in Christ. I am the offspring of Abraham by faith. Keep my heart seeking after you as I hear and remember your works in Israel and in my own life. Amen.
