TLIC Psalms. September 15. The Deep.

Read Psalm 104:5-9. 5He set the earth on its foundations, so that it should never be moved. 6You covered it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. 7At your rebuke they fled; at the sound of your thunder they took to flight. 8The mountains rose, the valleys sank down to the place that you appointed for them. 9You set a boundary that they may not pass, so that they might not again cover the earth.

In ancient mythologies the sea is always considered wickedness incarnate. Chaos at best, evil at worst. But in the Bible the sea is part of God’s grand design. In Psalm 104 the deep is the Earth’s shirt, and it’s just the right size. The sea is decreed, bounded, and controlled by God. It is not the result of a great cosmic battle, nor is it the home of the chaos monster. It is God’s good creation.

When Jesus calmed the sea he was repeating Genesis 1, and taking his place as the Lord of Psalm 104. In this world today the sea of chaos exists, that’s for sure, but it is bounded by its Creator, the loving Lord Jesus. The one who walks on its waves, and rests through its storms.

One day that One will re-order creation. As Revelation 21:1 tells us the New Creation will have “no more sea.” No more evil. No more peril. No more unpredictable, uncontrollable chaos. Just safety on the foundation that will never be moved. Jesus our shore.

To live is Christ means trusting our union with the One who controls all chaos and evil today, and the One who will one day remove all chaos and evil from life’s equation. Until then trust that he will always bring you to shore.

You: Where does your life feel like chaos today?

You in Christ: How does meditating on your union with Christ help you in the chaos of life?

Christ in you: How can you let the love of Christ calm your chaotic sea today?

Pray: Jesus, you created and control everything, including my life. I know one day you will not only bound the “sea,” but will remove it completely. Help me to trust your chaos shattering love today. Amen.
