Read Psalm 104:1-4. 1Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty, 2covering yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out the heavens like a tent. 3He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters; he makes the clouds his chariot; he rides on the wings of the wind; 4he makes his messengers winds, his ministers a flaming fire.
Psalm 104 begins where Psalm 103 left off. This psalm’s majesty places it at the top of any list of the praise psalms. God is to be blessed because he transcends yet delights in nature. He wears light like a robe. He pitches his sky tent and builds his cosmic chambers in space. He rides on the wind in his cloud chariot. Wind and fire do his bidding.
This is usually where we would say something about our union with Christ and how what is true of Jesus is also true of us. But here we want to see the distinction between Jesus and us, and frankly between Christ and all creation. Yes, in his humanity Christ became the creation, but in his divinity, Jesus maintained his unique power over the creation. Storm calming. Water walking. Bread multiplying. Fish catching. Tree cursing. Disease healing power.
And now the sky is Christ’s throne and the Earth his footstool. Robed in light’s majesty, he rules as the firstborn over all creation. The angels may be wind and fire, but he is God anointed by God (Heb. 1:7-9). He alone in creation is also its Creator. Not you. Not me. And we never will be. Christ alone will always and forever hold that distinction.
Bless his name!
To live is Christ is to not only be like Christ, but it is to also recognize how we will never be like Christ. We will never be creator, sustainer, God anointed by God. Jesus is the only human that can also claim such divinity. He alone bridges God and man, and praise God that bridge will never be burned.
You: Repeat after me – I am not God.
You in Christ: What are some of the attributes of God that we receive in Christ? What are some of the attributes of God we will never receive, even in Christ?
Christ in you: The Christ in you is the God who upholds the universe by the word of his power. How does this truth encourage you today?
Pray: Jesus, you are very great! You alone deserve the glory as our creator become creation. Help my heart to find rest in this awesome truth today. Amen.
