Read Psalm 89:19-26. 19Of old you spoke in a vision to your godly one, and said: “I have granted help to one who is mighty; I have exalted one chosen from the people. 20I have found David, my servant; with my holy oil I have anointed him, 21so that my hand shall be established with him; my arm also shall strengthen him. 22The enemy shall not outwit him; the wicked shall not humble him. 23I will crush his foes before him and strike down those who hate him. 24My faithfulness and my steadfast love shall be with him, and in my name shall his horn be exalted. 25I will set his hand on the sea and his right hand on the rivers. 26He shall cry to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.’
As the psalmist continues to praise the faithfulness of God, he will now focus upon the Davidic Covenant, God’s promises to the House of David found in 2 Samuel 7. God chose David out of the sheep pasture. He exalted him, anointed him, established him, and strengthened him (go back and read the first 50 psalms or so). Any one of these descriptions read alone may not stand out to us, but when heaped together, as they are here, we can see that David was an incredibly blessed individual, a man after God’s heart.
All of this and more can be said of Christ. He is God’s chosen, exalted, anointed, established, and strengthened servant. Because he cried out to the Father on the cross in faith, “Into your hand I commit my spirit,” Jesus is now our Rock of Salvation.
What does this mean? It means that this same heaping of blessings is now ours in Christ.
Chosen? Yes, before the world began.
Exalted? Yes, seated at Christ’s right hand.
Anointed? Yes, with the very Spirit of God.
Established? Yes, never to falter or fail.
Strengthened? Yes, resurrection power lives in us.
Defended? Yes, against every power until final victory is won.
To live is Christ is to live from every one of these spiritual blessings in Christ. What was spoken of old over you, declare each day over yourself.
You: Do you see yourself as chosen, exalted, anointed, established, and defended?
You in Christ: How does union with Christ make us all these things?
Christ in you: How can you purposefully live from these blessings today?
Pray: Father, make me like Jesus by your grace. Your choosing, exalting, anointing, establishing, and strengthening grace. Amen.
