Read Psalm 47:4-9. 4He chose our heritage for us, the pride of Jacob whom he loves. 5God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet. 6Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises! 7For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm! 8God reigns over the nations; God sits on his holy throne. 9The princes of the peoples gather as the people of the God of Abraham. For the shields of the earth belong to God; he is highly exalted!
Our God-King is ascending his holy throne. Trumpets are blaring. The people are shouting. Praises rise from the throngs of citizens gathered to witness this great day. What day? The day when all the people and princes of all the nations are gathered as one, as the people of Abraham, drawn to the highly exalted King of all the earth.
This future day that David envisions has already begun. The exaltation of Christ upon the cross has launched the drawing process of all men to himself (John 12:32). Those who are in Christ have become the children of Abraham (Gal. 3:7). All who are in him are counted as righteous by faith, not by works of the law, and belong to God (Rom. 4:11). Now the enthroned God-Man-King rules as head over the church, his body (Eph. 1:20-23).
What is left for us to do? Just one thing. Gather. Exalt. And sing praises to our King, sing praises!
Until the great day of the Lord Jesus is brought to its full consummation, may we as one “to live is Christ” to the praise of his glorious grace.
You: Do you gather with the people of God to praise the name of God?
You in Christ: How can your voice and your life exalt the King of glory today?
Christ in you: Did you spend time in joyful praise yesterday? Continue it today.
Pray: Father, make all that you have drawn to yourself one by your grace, and may we all with one voice glorify your son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
