Read Psalm 37:7-11. 7Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! 8Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. 9For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land. 10In just a little while, the wicked will be no more; though you look carefully at his place, he will not be there. 11But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.
You probably recognize that Jesus quoted verse 11 in his famous Sermon on the Mount. The wicked appear to prosper in this lifetime, but their way will be cut off, no more, not there. So don’t worry about the wicked. Instead be meek. It is the meek who live in shalom. It is the meek that inherit the land.
But have you ever wondered who exactly are the meek?
The meek are those who live by the rule of faith. Not wrath. Not fretting. The meek easily admit that they fully depend on God alone for salvation. The meek have humbled themselves before the Lord so that he can lift them up.
Does this describe you? It describes Christ. In fact, in the only place in scripture that Jesus described himself, he called himself meek (Matt. 11:29). Christ’s meekness took him all the way to the humiliation and obedience of the cross. And his obedience earned him the Earth, and everything in it, as his reward. His inheritance.
Now, as Christ lives in us, we are the meek heirs of the entire earth, waiting patiently for his return. In Christ we are kingdom dwellers, delighting in his abundant peace.
To live is Christ is having the inherited meekness of Christ in us and the inherited land of Christ waiting for us.
You: Are your days characterized by anger and fretting?
You in Christ: In Christ we have abundant peace. Does this describe how you live? In peace? How does our faith in Christ give us his peace?
Christ in you: Christ described himself as meek. Does his meekness flow out of you too?
Pray: Jesus, you are meek, and that meekness has saved my soul. Let me share in your peace today and everyday as I learn to live by faith in your timing and your ways. Amen.
