TLIC PROVERBS. JANUARY 22: FIND GOD.

Proverbs 2:5. then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.

At my church we do an Easter egg hunt each year. All the kids line up behind a rope and then, when the rope drops, the kids scramble off to find as many eggs as they can. They have to “hunt” for the eggs. But it’s not a very difficult hunt because the eggs are all really bright, and just lying there on the grass in a big open field. In fact, it’s so easy we have to limit how many eggs can be taken by each child.

Yesterday we looked at Proverbs 2:4 where Solomon tells us to search for wisdom like hidden treasure. God’s promise to us is that if we look for him we will always find him. If we draw near to God, he will always draw near to us. We can even go as far as to say that God has drawn near to us before we drew near to him. How? In Christ.

Our hunt for wisdom is like hunting for those Easter eggs at my church. God’s wisdom and the knowledge of God is hidden in plain sight. The knowledge of God is both hidden and revealed in Christ. God’s wisdom is both hidden and revealed in the cross. Christ and his cross have made the unknowable God known. The unconditional love and sacrifice of God, his mercy and kindness, his justice and holiness are all revealed in Christ and in the cross. But they are also hidden in that same cross, and only those who will search for him there, at Calvary, will find the true God. God hidden in the saving work of Jesus. A work that many will reject as foolishness.

When a child finds an Easter Egg what do they do? They open it up revealing that sweet treat that they eat taking into themselves the mystery of the egg. What was hidden in the egg is now inside of them. The same is true of our union with Christ. We partake of the hidden Christ, receiving his love, mercy, kindness, justice, and holiness into ourselves. Now God is hidden IN us. The knowledge of God has become the knowing of God in the most intimate of relationships. A relationship of complete trust.

You: Have you been seeking the knowledge of God in Christ, or from somewhere else?

You in Christ: How does Christ reveal God to you? Remember Jesus’ words, “If you have seen me, you have seen the Father.”

Christ in you: How can you bring the Christ hidden in you into plain sight today?

Pray: Father, thank you for hiding yourself in plain sight, in Jesus and his cross. May I know you by knowing him. Amen.
