Read Psalm 5:1-6. 1Give ear to my words, O Lord; consider my groaning. 2Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you do I pray. 3O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch. 4For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. 5The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers. 6You destroy those who speak lies; the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.
If Psalm 4 was an evening psalm, then Psalm 5 is a morning psalm. David awakes to groaning, mumbling, murmuring, which quickly turns to cries to his king and his God. He acknowledges that even the king is under the authority of God. He prepares a sacrifice for God, and then he watches for God’s answer.
What is David watching for? Justice for his enemies. The boastful, evildoing, bloodthirsty and deceitful men that seek to destroy both his reputation and even his life. David isn’t claiming that he is more righteous than his enemies, but rather, that his cause is more righteous. Why can he claim this? Because he is covenanted with God. David knows that he is God’s sovereign choice. His anointed one.
What are you facing this morning? What do wake up groaning about? What is your cause this morning? Is it Christ’s cause or your own? Is he your king and your God? Is your morning a time of preparing yourself as a living sacrifice to him, or simply a time of preparing yourself for your own kingdom building?
To live is Christ, is to wake up each morning and prepare yourself for spiritual battle, trusting that your cause is just, for it is the cause of Christ. The cause of his love and salvation.
In Christ: Can you say to Jesus, “You are MY king and MY God?” Have your personalized your relationship with him like this?
Christ in you: What is your morning routine? Does it include preparing your heart and mind for spiritual battle?
Pray. Jesus you are my king and my God. Direct my life today. Make the enemy flee. May your cause be mine. The cause of love and kindness that brings salvation to all. Amen.
