Proverbs 1:2. To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight,
We can definitely say that being wise is pretty important to God. The whole Bible is one big book of ancient wisdom literature. King Solomon wrote and collected hundreds and hundreds of proverbs so that we might be wise. And, of course, Jesus came to earth to die for our sins and offer us his life so that we might be wise.
But what does it mean to be wise? Solomon wants us to know wisdom, but what exactly is wisdom?
Simply put, wisdom is skill in living.
Wisdom isn’t only knowing what to do (morality), but it is knowing how to do it, when to do it, and why to do it. A person can have much knowledge and still not be wise. For example, you might get an A+ in the class yet fail to appreciate the class. A person can be moral, but still not be wise. For example, you might try to help the poor, but in so doing bring more long term problems.
Christ was not only knowledgeable and moral, he was wise. He IS wisdom. The cross of Christ not only answers all of our WHAT questions, it also answers all of our HOW and WHY questions. The life and love of Christ is the final answer to everything. Do you want skill in living? Do you want to be wise? Then learn Christ. Learn to trust Christ. Learn to trust like Christ.
In Christ: How would you define wisdom? How can you place Christ into your definition?
Christ in you: Do you have knowledge about Christ only? Or do you know how Christ’s life in you answers the HOW and WHY questions?
Pray: Father, with you I can be wise because I am loved and can share love with others. Help me to not only behave but to also love others while I obey. Amen.
