Read Psalm 148:7-14. 7Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all deeps, 8fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy wind fulfilling his word! 9Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars! 10Beasts and all livestock, creeping things and flying birds! 11Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth! 12Young men and maidens together, old men and children! 13Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his majesty is above earth and heaven. 14He has raised up a horn for his people, praise for all his saints, for the people of Israel who are near to him. Praise the Lord!
From the cosmos, to the creatures, to the covenant people of God, praise has been passed along to us to complete. The sun, moon, and stars praised God by their simple existence. We, however, are conscious of our praise because we are conscious of the exaltation of God’s name, and we are the recipients of his love. His horn of salvation. His drawing us near to him.
In the New Testament, Zechariah will declare Christ to be the horn of our salvation, and Paul will remind us that God has given Jesus the name that is above every other name. Every knee will bow to him – kings, princes, young men, maidens, old men and children.
The praise of Christ is the trajectory of all history. It is how he psalms end, it is how the Bible ends, and it is how this epoch of human history will end. The saints of God gathered around the throne singing “Worthy is the Lamb.” This is a gathering that will unite all creation under Christ. The bond of mankind is the praise of God.
Do you gather for praise? One day you will. Why not start now? It might just teach you to live in harmony with others. It might just help you to live is Christ.
Prayer. Jesus, all the cosmos, all creation, and all humanity will be united in praise to you. I want that now. Let my voice join the everlasting chorus. Amen.
