Read Psalm 119:1-8 1Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord! 2Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart, 3who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways! 4You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently. 5Oh that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes! 6Then I shall not be put to shame, having my eyes fixed on all your commandments. 7I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous rules. 8I will keep your statutes; do not utterly forsake me!
The psalms began with THE Man whose delight is in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night (1:2). Palm 119 is meant to be that meditation upon the law of the Lord, the Torah, the entirety of Old Testament scripture (not just the Mosaic Code).
The psalm opens with a description of the whole-hearted person. They are undivided. They seek to know God through his word steadfastly keeping his statutes and precepts.
This love for the word is love for God. This is happiness. This is shamelessness. This is confidence. Does any other way of life offer its equal? Can any other source of happiness, shamelessness, and confidence claim the endurance, the perfection, or the guidance of the Word of God?
Of course, only someone who is locked into an unconditional covenant with God would ever pray this psalm. Only the one whose failures are forsaken, and whose success is guaranteed would mediate upon and embrace the commandments, statutes, and precepts of God and find them to be full of life giving joy. Only the one who can see that the law of the Lord is fulfilled fully in us by our union with Christ could embrace not only the Torah as shadow, but more completely the Law of Christ as substance.
To live is Christ will give you this undivided heart. A heart that loves God and loves his word as the final source of understanding who our God is – the living Word. Jesus. The Word now written upon our hearts with his hand of love.
Prayer. Jesus, as I read the words on the page, help me to see your face, your love, your gospel, the word of Christ. May it be my joy and my guide. Amen.
Oh Pastor Brady, our Lord is using these devotions in the Psalms to feed, encourage and to grow and build His children. Thank you for your faithfulness and diligence in your study of His word and for sharing it in devotional format. What a blessing!
