Read Psalm 105:8-11. 8He remembers his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations, 9the covenant that he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac, 10which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant, 11saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan as your portion for an inheritance.”
Do you remember the Abrahamic Covenant? God called Abram from the land of Ur and told him to go to “a land that I will show you,” the Promised Land. Abram packed up his family and went, settling in the land of Canaan as his promised inheritance.
Notice the nature of the Abrahamic Covenant as interpreted by the psalmist. Normally a covenant requires faithfulness by both parties, in this case God and Abraham (Israel). But look at the language used here. HE remembers. HE commanded. HE made. HIS promise. HE confirmed. I WILL give.
Is the New Covenant in which we stand any different? No. God does it all. It is God, and God alone, both promising and fulfilling, commanding and obeying, giving and receiving. What do we receive in Christ? Like Abraham we receive a forever home. A place of rest and safety. A land of plenty, flowing with the milk and honey of God’s love. Isn’t that what we all long for at the deepest level? A place where we can be loved for who we truly are?
To live is Christ places us firmly within the covenant promises of Christ, and within the land of his love. A forever home of goodness and mercy all the days of our lives. Forever.
Prayer. Jesus, I can’t wait to live in a land with you someday, but until then let me live within the promises of your love and faithfulness. Amen.
