TLIC Psalms. September 13. Bless the Lord.

Read Psalm 103:19-22. 19The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all. 20Bless the Lord, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word, obeying the voice of his word! 21Bless the Lord, all his hosts, his ministers, who do his will! 22Bless the Lord, all his works, in all places of his dominion. Bless the Lord, O my soul!

Bless the Lord! Sure it sounds great but how? How does a finite, needy, sinful person like you and like me bless the Lord? The infinite, holy, transcendent, self-sufficient Lord? Doesn’t God bless us, and not the other way around?

Yes, he does. And that’s where we all must begin, acknowledging and basking in the blessing of God that has been bestowed upon us in Christ. We have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in the Heavenly places in Christ Jesus, Paul says.

So bless the Lord is always a response for the covenant Christian, just as it was for the covenant King David. And let’s be perfectly clear here, when God blesses us it is an addition to our souls, our hearts, our very lives. But when we bless the Lord we are adding nothing to him. God is full. Blessing God therefore is the recognition of the greatness of God. The completeness of Christ. The fullness of the Spirit. All of which we participate in in Christ.

The angels get this, as do all of his works. But do we get it? When’s the last time you blessed the Lord? Not to add anything to him, but to simply praise him for what he is and what he has done. His greatest work – the work of Christ in us.

To live is Christ gives us every reason we need to bless the Lord.

Prayer. Jesus, I bless your name. I choose to join alongside the angels and all creation, the hosts and all the works of your hand. Use my voice to bring blessing to you and faith to others. Amen.
