Read Psalm 86:8-13. 8There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours. 9All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name. 10For you are great and do wondrous things; you alone are God. 11Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name. 12I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever. 13For great is your steadfast love toward me; you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.
The uniqueness of God, his separateness, his aloneness, is something that David has no problem accepting. This is what makes David a man after God’s own heart – the simple fact that he never dabbled in polytheism. You alone are God.
And this is what makes God the lord (Adonai) – there is no other option. God is master because he is alone. We serve God because he is the only God to serve, and we have to serve something, that’s how we were made. Therefore, all the nations sall come and worship before you. Simply put, worship is in our DNA.
In the New Testament Jesus receives the title of lord, a recognition we can only give to him by the power of the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 12:3. no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.
To live is Christ is not about making Jesus the lord of your life. No one makes Jesus the lord of their life. He is, by his very being, the lord of every life. He alone is God. There simply are no other gods to choose from. Rather, to live is Christ is choosing to recognize and receive the lordship of Christ over your life. To say to Christ today, teach me your ways, unite my heart to fear your name. And then to do it again tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day, until we see him face to face.
Why should we? Because great is his steadfast covenant love toward us, a love that would go to Sheol and back again so that we might do the same.
Prayer. Jesus, you alone are God. You are lord over my life. May I never resist your loving lordship over my life. Amen.
