February 5. Romans 8:14. Sonship part 1: An Introduction.

Romans 8:14. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

Union with Christ brings with it the greatest of spiritual blessings, none greater than the blessing of sonship. God is our dad. Can any reality be more comforting than this?

Paul is returning to one of the greatest statements of our position in Christ. We ARE led by the Spirit of God, therefore, we ARE sons of God.

This is adult sonship. The imagery is that of a slave who has passed through manumission and is now adopted as an adult son. Much like Judah Ben-Hur (if you haven’t seen the original movie I question what you’re doing with your life), we are now heirs with Christ. Ben-Hur goes from being a galley slave doomed to suffer in the bowels of a Roman ship, to, after rescuing its commander, Arrius, being adopted as his adult son and heir.

Paul described this same kind of adoption as sons in Galatians:
Galatians 4:1-7. I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave, though he is the owner of everything, 2 but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by his father. 3 In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world. 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

Our sonship is a shared sonship with Jesus Christ. It is rooted in our union with him. It is rooted in the ministry of the Spirit. It is profound theology. So today, let’s take a minute to give an overview of the theology of sonship in the Bible.

In the Garden humanity was meant to live as sons of God. His children. Adam is called the “son of God” in Luke’s genealogy of Jesus.

In Exodus 4 Israel is collectively called the son of God. God goes to war with Pharaoh to rescue his son from slavery and death. He takes vengeance upon the sons of Egypt in order to honor the death of his son at the hands of the Pharaoh.

In making a covenant with King David (2 Samuel 7), God declares himself to be David’s eternal father. The Messianic line is established as a sonship between God and the king.

Then there is Christ himself, the eternal son of God, who came to unite us with his life and his sonship. Jesus, the Son of God, lived in complete dependency upon God the Father. At the same time, he had the same authority and purpose as God the Father. He came to do his Father’s business.

“To live is Christ” makes us the adopted sons of God. Whether you are a man or a woman, if you are in Christ you are a son. An heir. A co-heir with Christ. Your sonship is the basis of everything that we have said that eternal life is. Intimacy with God -that’s sonship. Impact in the world – that’s sonship. Identity and meaning – that’s sonship. Shalom – that’s sonship. Glory – that’s sonship. Imago Dei -that’s sonship.

Revelation 21:7. The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.

Is your life powered by sonship? What does the idea of sonship mean to you? How does your union with Christ make you the son of God?

As we focus on our sonship this week it just seems appropriate to highlight the music of All Sons and Daughters.
