TLIC Psalms. June 24. At the Set Time.

Read Psalm 75:1-5.  1We give thanks to you, O God; we give thanks, for your name is near. We recount your wondrous deeds. 2“At the set time that I appoint     I will judge with equity. 3When the earth totters, and all its inhabitants, it is I who keep steady its pillars. 4I say to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’ and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horn; 5do not lift up your horn on high, or speak with haughty neck.’”

Psalm 75 appears to be God’s response to Psalm 74. Asaph repeatedly asked God why he wasn’t doing anything about his enemies and their bold opposition to the people of God. God’s response? At the set time.

To understand God, we must understand that everything he does, he does at just the right time. His predetermined time. The set time. This is also the word for season. As the Teacher says in Ecclesiastes, “For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under Heaven.” It is highly unlikely that we can change any of God’s set times. Rather we must get ourselves in line with the seasons of God, not the other way around.

Can you give thanks for God’s timing in all things, even when it doesn’t match you own? Or have your thoughts toward God, your impatience with him, become a lifted horn and a haughty neck? A boast in your own control over time and space?

For those who believe that to live is Christ, our boast is in the cross alone. Jesus came to us at just the right time. When the fullness of time had come, he came. And at just the right time he died. At just the right time he will return. At the set time he will judge the earth with equity. An equity rooted in faith alone, in Christ alone. In a very real way that is the only thing about the future that we need to know. Therefore, don’t worry about tomorrow. Trust the set times of the Lord.

You: To what degree do you trust God’s timing?

You in Christ: How does knowing that you are in Christ allow you to trust God for all things in his time?

Christ in you: What will today look like if you trust Christ instead of worrying about tomorrow?

Prayer. Father, I trust your timing. Help me to trust it more. Amen.
